| Agency Description | Moves for Western Australia's independence from the British Home office started in the mid-1880's. In December 1888 the Legislative Council was abolished in order to give the electors a chance to express their views on the subject of a new constitution for the colony. A Bill to grant a constitution to Western Australia finally received the assent of Queen Victoria on 15 August 1890. The proclamation of the new Constitution was made in Perth on 21 October 1890 by the Governor. Elections for the new Legislative Assembly were held shortly afterwards, and the members of the new Parliament were sworn in on 30 December 1890.
The first Parliament of Western Australia was officially opened on 20 January 1891. It consisted of two houses - Legislative Council or Upper House, and the Legislative Assembly or Lower House. |
