Agency Description  Prior to 1877, public works had been administered by the Colonial Secretary's Office . In that year, a Director of Public Works was appointed, and in the following year he was also given the title of Commissioner of Railways. In 1879 the Director of Public Works became a member of the Executive Council. That year may be taken as the date when the Department attained its independent existence. In 1890 the Department was separated into two departments, the Department of Works & Buildings and the Western Australian Government Railways, the former becoming the Public Works Department.
