Series Description  The Defence Act 1903 - 41 and Amended Act 1963 is a Commonwealth Act under the Westminster System, with parts 4 & 5 referring to Conscientious Objectors. Such a person applied to their Local District Court for Exemption from Military Service. Should the applicant be denied they are then able to appeal before the Supreme Court of the State in which they reside. The Register gives No. of Applicant, Full name, Address, Occupation, Ground on which Exemption is claimed, Decesion, Date of Lodgement and appeal, Decision, Remarks. Conscientious Objectors applied initially to the army for exemption. If that was rejected they could appeal through the magistrate's court - the local exemption court, presided over by the local stipendiary magistrate. Appeals against those went to the Supreme Court in its general appellate jurisdiction.
