Series Description

Original sewerage and drainage surveys of the Metropolitan area conducted until 1912 by the Public Works Department (PWD) and later by the Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Department (WSS&DD) and from the early 1920's by the Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Department (MWSS&DD). All the field books compiled and registered prior to 1910 were allotted PWD numbers. These numbers were cancelled when the books were transferred to the WSS&DD and the MWSS&DD.

The series order is an amalgamation of both WSS&DD and MWSS&DD book numbers. The series order reflects the date that books were registered by these agencies and not their date of origin.

A partial listing of these books is provided in the Public Works Department Field and Plan Book Registers (See Record Series No. 218, Volumes 2 - 4). The WSS&DD or MWSS&DD numbers are given (often with the date of transfer)., in the extreme right hand or 'Remarks' column of these registers. To ascertain the State Records Office's holdings, check the MWSS&DD number thus identified against the Items list within this Record Series.

The field surveys recorded in these books form the basis for the 1 inch to 40 feet plan coverage of the Metropolitan area (See Record Series 634, Consignment 4156).
